Fitchburg Northern
This engine is a freelance model that represents the general class of narrow gauge equipment that ran on the Denver & Rio Grande Western. The design is by Capt. Tom Rhodes, designer of the steam launch Tuscarora written up in live steam magazine some years ago. The 2 1/2" scale Chloe design was used as a base for the running gear by adding an additional set of drivers along with a built-up frame design. (note: a waterjet frame is also now available.) Tom also increased the boiler to a 6 5/8" diameter. this gives more steaming capacity. This engine performs well and is a pleasing looking model that offers a larger hauling capacity than the Chloe. As with the Chloe, the castings can be handled on a 9" swing lathe. This set of drawings includes an edited version of Tom's construction article. "The engine is a good beginner's project, and the finished project will make the builder proud." - Gene Allen
